Short Presentation by Ms. Christine Booras on Tai Chi and Qigong
A calm mind and strong body are our best tools in achieving an optimal state of well-being. As the “Baby Boomer” generation continues to pursue painfree health, longevity and fitness, it becomes apparent that some forms of exercise once enjoyable have taken a toll on joints and muscles that have endured years of use, and abuse. In searching for what type of regimens one can still participate in, yet obtain and maintain excellent health, we look to the East and have discovered an art practiced for thousands of years that may be our answer to truly connecting the mind, body and spirit.
“Tai Chi” (tie-CHEE), sometimes described as "meditation in motion", is rapidly gaining popularity as an excellent addition to the daily fitness regimen for people of all ages. The exercises and movements are performed slowly and controlled with complete concentration. Originally developed in China as a form of self-defense, this graceful form of exercise has become increasingly popular around the world, both as a basic exercise program and as a complement to other health care methods.
“Qigong” (chee-GOONG) can be translated into “working with the breath” and is the core of a Tai Chi workout. Tai Chi is basically Qigong movements sequenced together in a manner so as to create a moving form. With regards to the more recent medical developments in this area, Dr. Oz, "America's Dr.", has appropriately called Tai Chi and Qigong the single most important activity that Americans should be doing to improve longevity.
